ARYI began as an organization addressing HIV/AIDS in Africa. Since 2005, ARYI has grown to encompass issues affecting the spread of the disease, and thus has created a more comprehensive and collaborative strategy to its HIV/AIDS program.

Leadership, Social Entrepreneurship, and HIV/AIDS In 2007, ARYI partnered with AIESEC-Africa to develop a unique program focusing on promoting leadership and social entrepreneurship in addressing HIV/AIDS. Activities of the partnership will shortly be announced and activities will start at December 1, 2007. Sixteen countries in Africa are focused in this program. Town Hall Meetings – World AIDS Orphans Day In May 2005, ARYI collaborated with forty community organizations in Africa and India to host a series of town hall meetings as part of World AIDS Orphans Day, an event of the Association Francois-Xavier Bagnoud. The town hall meetings provided an opportunity for children and youth to work alongside mayors and community members to create local strategies to increase access to education and mitigate other impacts of HIV/AIDS on children. Central to the success of the town hall meetings was the fact that they were lead by children and youth. Children’s Declaration – highlighting children’s rights, needs, and concerns – were developed by the youth participants prior to the meetings; these were then presented to officials from local governments, United Nations agencies, and non-governmental and community-based organizations. In 2005 and 2006, ARYI worked with Association Francois-Xavier Bagnoud, to mobilize mayors, NGOs, government leaders, and civil society to advocate for the needs and rights of children orphaned and made vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. Apart from the international events that take place on May 7, an international coalition (called the May 7 Coalition) formed in 2006 in order to increase organizational collaborations and continue advocacy efforts throughout the year. HIV/AIDS and Human Trafficking Program
ARYI and FAIR Fund developed a model program to empower and assist young people in preventing human trafficking and HIV/AIDS, and understanding the link between the two. The project was piloted in Kenya. Focus countries will be Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Local Health Data Program In addition to assembling local health data on HIV/AIDS incidence and prevalence, this program collects local stories, and experiences from individuals and organizations in Africa. |
